Delverium Animal Pen Size: Why Is My Pen Invalid?
A pen with fewer than 576 interior tiles can still fail the size check. Here is the rule the developer confirmed.

Does 24×24 Mean Any 576-Tile Shape?
No. In a September 2026 reply, Sagestone Games said the game checks the width and height of connected pen tiles separately. The maximum is 24×24 internal tiles. A 20×28 interior has fewer tiles than 24×24, but its 28-tile side exceeds the limit; reducing only its total area will not fix that.
Count the enclosed space inside the fencing, not the outside footprint. The player in the discussion reported that a 20×28 footprint failed while a 20×26 footprint worked; the developer’s internal-size rule explains why fence dimensions and usable interior dimensions must be kept separate.
What Is the Minimum Pen Size?
The community wiki lists a 2×3 internal-tile minimum, fencing and a water trough. Its pen documentation predates Early Access, and the developer’s newer reply confirms only the 24×24 maximum and how width and height are checked. Treat the 2×3 minimum and trough requirement as wiki-documented until they are checked in the current game build.
How to Fix an Invalid Pen
- Count the connected interior tiles in each direction. Shorten any side above 24 internal tiles.
- Check the fence enclosure and water trough against the documented pen requirements.
- If you are building toward the five-animal achievement, leave enough room for five animals; the achievement itself does not prescribe a pen shape.
