Can You Play Permafrost Solo? Single-Player and Co-op
The supported player modes, the group limit and the distinction between playing alone and playing offline.
Quick Answer
Yes. Permafrost supports single-player. You can play alone or use online co-op with up to four players total. You do not need friends to play. The official listing confirms solo support, but does not establish completely offline operation.

Solo or co-op: which mode do you need?
| You want to play… | Supported mode | Group size |
|---|---|---|
| By yourself | Single-player | 1 player |
| With friends over the internet | Online co-op | Up to 4 players total, including you |
| On one screen with local controllers | Local / split-screen support is not confirmed in the checked listing | Not confirmed |
Steam lists Single-player separately from Online Co-op. You do not need to assemble a group to choose Permafrost for solo survival. The four-player limit means you plus three friends; it does not mean four friends in addition to you.
What do you do when playing alone?
The developers describe the same frozen open-world survival premise for solo players and groups: exploring, scavenging, crafting and rebuilding shelters. Progress involves exploring and restoring abandoned infrastructure. These activities are advertised for single-player, rather than being presented as a separate multiplayer-only campaign.
A dog companion is also part of the advertised experience. Its stated roles include scouting, warning of danger and carrying supplies. That is a useful distinction if you are looking for solitary survival with an in-world companion, rather than needing another human player.
The developers say cooperation allows players to divide responsibilities; they do not promise that a larger group makes the cold easier. For your first solo outing, use a practical planning checklist: identify your nearest shelter, decide what supplies you need for the return journey and avoid committing to a long expedition just because a destination is visible. This is planning advice, not a tested equipment recipe or a claim about a particular difficulty setting.
Can you play completely offline?
Single-player support is confirmed; completely offline operation is not established by that label. The checked official store text does not explain first-launch authentication, platform login requirements or whether every part of a solo session works without an internet connection.
If offline access is essential to you, check the current developer announcements or ask the publisher before buying. After installing, a useful personal check is to launch the game while connected first, then test your own solo save with the connection unavailable. Treat that result as applying to your installed version and platform. This page has not performed that game test and does not promise offline compatibility.
Before you start a solo game
- Choose the actual Permafrost game by SpaceRocket Games and Toplitz Productions, Steam app 2254990. The title also appears in unrelated games and scientific search results.
- Check that your PC meets its current requirements; a supported player mode does not establish performance on your hardware.
- Check which build you installed. An older demo or October 2026 timed preview is not the same product state as the Early Access game.
- Use single-player for playing alone. If you want friends to join, check the current in-game co-op options and platform instructions rather than assuming a solo world can always convert or carry over.
Save transfer between modes, the exact host workflow and dedicated-server availability are separate questions. The sources used here establish the supported modes and player count, but do not establish those additional features.
