Graveyard Keeper 2 Coal: Where to Get It and Why the Smithy Stops

Produce Coal with a Zombie Miner, transport it to the factory and distinguish Coal from the yard Fuel pool.

Quick Answer

The renewable coal source is the Zombie Miner in the Old Mine. Its recorded base cycle produces 2 Coal with 1 Iron Ore. Give the miner a pickaxe, inspect local output, then use the porter to move it to the factory. A Smithy recipe requiring Coal does not use the yard's separate Fuel pool.

Get coal from zombie mining

Open the Old Mine and reveal its gathering research, then build and staff the Zombie Miner. This is a production station, not a surface coal vein you repeatedly hit. If you cannot yet access the mine, follow the two-entrance unlock sequence.

Inspect the miner's selection panel and local storage. Player reports describe choices for ore, coal or both on their builds. Use the selection your installed version offers and confirm the actual output of a cycle before planning a large order.

This table describes the exported mining craft, not a universal stopwatch result. Worker tool, route and output selection can affect what reaches the receiving chest.

Separate mining from delivery

  1. Open local mine storage and look for newly produced Coal.
  2. If Coal exists there, inspect the porter assignment and its route to the factory.
  3. Check that the receiving storage has space and can feed the intended line.
  4. If the Smithy still waits, inspect its input connection, supplier and queued recipe.
  5. Run one craft and verify Coal decreases while its output appears.
Original production diagnostic: inspect local output before rebuilding the consuming station.

Coal is consumed as an item by the factory recipes. The yard Furnace II iron recipe instead uses Iron Ore and Fuel. A full firewood shed does not prove a factory Coal requirement is satisfied, and a stack of Coal does not prove the yard Fuel counter is filled.

When choosing between routes, consider which inputs and stations are ready. For a small early iron batch, a working yard furnace can avoid waiting for mine automation. For a steady factory line, keep mine transport and receiving storage operating.

Diagnose a shortage

  • No miner: finish mine access, research and staffing.
  • Ore arrives without expected Coal: check the miner's selected output and local chest before changing the factory.
  • Coal is stored but not consumed: check the recipe and input delivery connection.
  • Both items missing: check worker assignment, tool and output capacity.
  • Old guide sends you to a first-game coal cliff: use the GK2 Old Mine route instead.
