Permafrost Not Launching and GPU Crash Dump Troubleshooting
Separate release delays from installed-game crashes, verify Steam files and collect the diagnostics Toplitz requests.
Quick Answer
For an installed copy, check updates and hardware, verify Steam files, update the graphics driver and save the full error. A historical GPU crash report does not prove one universal fix. If the store says Coming Soon, check release status first.

Identify what is failing
| Symptom | First check |
|---|---|
| Coming Soon; no Install button | Check the latest launch announcement. Steam purchasing opened by 13:51 UTC on October 9. Check your account’s ownership and installed edition; the earlier launch delay is historical. |
| Play returns to Play before the menu | Check installed edition, updates and requirements, then verify the files. |
| Unreal Crash Reporter or GPU Crash dump Triggered | Save the complete error and driver details; the label alone does not identify a single fix. |
| Game opens but runs poorly | Compare hardware and the selected GPU; record the scene and settings. |
On October 9, the developer announced a delay beyond the planned 14:00 CEST launch to include further fixes. Steam purchasing later opened by 13:51 UTC; the delay is historical. If your account has no playable copy, check the release status before troubleshooting an unavailable installation.
First checks for an installed Steam copy
These are Valve’s general launch checks, arranged so you can retest after each change. They are not a tested cure for every Permafrost crash.
- Restart the PC and Steam, then finish any pending game update. Confirm that you are launching the intended game, rather than an older demo or limited preview.
- Compare CPU, dedicated GPU, RAM and system type with the official requirements. Record the exact laptop GPU where applicable.
- In Steam, right-click the game in Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Wait for completion and try again. Valve notes that some local configuration files may fail verification normally.
- Install current graphics drivers from the GPU vendor or laptop manufacturer and apply Windows updates. Restart when requested, then retest before another change.
- Close an optional overlay or background utility for one test. Change one item at a time so its effect is clear.
Check whether you can reach the menu and load the session that previously failed. Record whether the crash happens before the menu, during loading or after a specific action. If nothing changes, prepare a support report instead of repeating the same checks.
What the older GPU crash report confirms
A November 2024 Steam discussion describes a GPU crash during D3D12 viewport creation. The publisher’s developer account suggested a graphics-driver update and checking DirectX. The original poster reported that these changes did not resolve the problem; the developer then requested diagnostic files.
The exchange supports collecting the full error and escalating persistent failures. It does not establish that every current Early Access crash has the same cause, or that a driver reinstall guarantees a fix. It is historical evidence, not a verified October 2026 regression.
Use Microsoft’s current DirectX guidance: inspect it with dxdiag and obtain Windows component updates through Windows Update. The game lists DirectX 11 at minimum and DirectX 12 as recommended. Those specifications do not establish support for arbitrary launch flags; a -dx11 workaround has not been verified here.
Prepare a useful Toplitz support report
- Save the complete crash message and a screenshot showing where it happens.
- Search Windows for dxdiag, open it and choose Save All Information to create the diagnostic text file.
- Record store, game version if visible, CPU, GPU, RAM, driver version and exact reproduction steps. Include which checks changed the outcome.
- Use the official Toplitz support portal, linked by the developer in the historical thread. Attach requested diagnostics and available crash files. If you cannot locate logs, ask support for the current game-specific location.
Keep saves intact while diagnosing. This checklist does not require deleting save folders, editing the registry or reinstalling Windows. Submit diagnostics privately through support and review them before sharing publicly.
