Which mode should you choose?
| System / mode | Target | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Quality | 30 FPS | Compare if stable image quality matters more to you than faster movement. |
| PS5 Performance | 60 FPS | Start here for more responsive first-person movement and aiming. |
| PS5 Pro Quality | 30 FPS; PSSR optional | Compare PSSR On and Off in the same moving scene. |
| PS5 Pro Performance | 60 FPS; PSSR optional | DF preferred PSSR in its test for better temporal stability. |
What Digital Foundry actually measured
DF Clips’ September 29 analysis shows mostly 60 FPS Performance gameplay, with traversal spikes and cutscene drops. Its Quality samples show 30 FPS. Pro’s PSSR results improve temporal stability but retain some artifacts. Watch gameplay charts at 5:20 ▶ or compare the cinematic at 5:46 ▶.
These are dated samples, not whole-game minimums or a benchmark performed by this website. If you are comparing a resolution claim, distinguish internal rendering, reconstructed output and cropped letterboxing. Hear the resolution discussion at 6:14 ▶.
Compare PSSR in motion
Judge fine edges, signs and fog in motion, rather than choosing only from a quoted resolution. Your display, viewing distance and tolerance for artifacts matter.
- Choose one mode and save a repeatable location.
- Compare PSSR On and Off while panning slowly past the same edges and signs.
- Keep motion blur, display and viewing distance unchanged during the comparison.
- Use whichever combination you find clearer and more comfortable; reassess after an update.
This procedure helps you choose between the available settings. It does not promise that every display or scene will match the reviewer’s preference.
What the October 8 patch changes about the evidence
KONAMI’s patch 1.4.0 reports improved frame pacing and reduced streaming stutter, and identifies menu build v1.5.154194. We have not rerun the September console benchmark on that build. The update therefore cannot be turned into a claim that the game now stays at 60 FPS everywhere.
Before comparing a report, note base PS5 versus Pro, Quality versus Performance, PSSR state, the menu build and whether the slowdown happens in gameplay or a cinematic. A PC shader report is not automatically a PS5 diagnosis.
Letterbox and practical troubleshooting
DF’s sampled base-PS5 gameplay paced similarly with Letterbox on and off, while cinematics retained bars. Watch the framing comparison at 9:34 ▶.
If pacing feels inconsistent, compare the same route in both modes after updating. Also identify whether the display has VRR enabled and whether the slowdown is repeatable at an area boundary. Avoid importing a PC INI or “optimization” mod as a console fix.
