Removing black bars during gameplay
- Open the display options and switch Letterbox off. Return to ordinary gameplay to judge the result.
- If the option is missing on an ultrawide PC display, install the October 8 update. Its notes specifically fix the missing Letterbox option.
- Check a cutscene separately. DF’s console test retained letterboxed cinematics even while ordinary gameplay was full screen.
DF found broadly similar base-PS5 gameplay performance with and without the bars in the tested route. Removing them is a framing preference, not a guaranteed FPS boost.
Film grain and chromatic aberration on PC
Wccftech’s PC test found that Post-processing Low removed several filters, including grain and chromatic aberration. Start by comparing that setting in a stationary scene before modifying files. A single Post-processing preset affects more than one effect.
For separate control, AeonGreyh’s No Post-Processing version 1 uses Engine.ini. It targets grain, chromatic aberration, depth of field and lens distortion; bloom and vignette are optional in its configuration.
- Close the game and back up your current
Engine.ini. Its location is%LOCALAPPDATA%\Townfall\Saved\Config\Windows. - Use the author’s file and instructions. Compare changes against your existing configuration before replacing it; another mod may use the same file.
- The author asks for Read-only. Record that change so you can reverse it when changing options or uninstalling.
- Retest the same scene. To undo the mod, close Townfall, clear Read-only and restore your original file; if you added a new INI, remove only that added file.
On consoles, DF’s September test found no separate grain or chromatic-aberration off switches. That observation does not prove a Windows preset has the same behavior.
HDR on Windows: establish a usable baseline
PCGamingWiki contributor testing reports that HDR activates when enabled in Windows, without an in-game HDR calibration screen. The contributor also reports highlight/tone-mapping limitations and a lack of apparent use of the display calibration profile. This is a community measurement, not a published KONAMI calibration recipe.
- First check a scene in SDR with Windows HDR off. Leave the game’s brightness controls at a sensible baseline.
- Enable HDR in Windows for the intended display, then restart Townfall before comparing the same scene.
- Look for clipped bright lights, unreadable dark areas and a washed-out UI. Avoid compensating with several unrelated display filters at once.
- If the result remains worse, use SDR for that setup. Record the display and build when reporting HDR problems.
A television switching into HDR mode does not prove the game maps highlights well. Steam Deck metadata also does not establish how Windows HDR behaves.
Fog quality is not fog removal
Lower Fog Quality is an ordinary PC rendering choice. It should not be presented as a guarantee that distant paths or enemies become visible. AeonGreyh explicitly says No Post-Processing does not affect fog.
A separate fog-altering mod changes the intended atmosphere and may change what is visible. Read that specific author’s controls and compatibility details, and preserve a clean comparison. Do not borrow a Silent Hill f fog-removal file for Townfall.
For low performance or uneven movement, use the performance troubleshooting page rather than assuming every visual filter causes the same problem.
