Silent Hill Townfall Stuttering Fixes and Workarounds

Frame drops when moving through the world or entering a new area, on hardware that should not be struggling. Here is what players report, and what is still unproven.

Quick Answer

There is no confirmed fix for stuttering in Silent Hill: Townfall. What players report trying, roughly in order: let the game finish compiling shaders by playing on and then restarting, turn off NVIDIA Reflex if your settings expose it, turn off Ray Tracing, update your GPU driver, and restart the game and retest.

None of that is developer-confirmed, and none of it is guaranteed. The stutter is reported on high-end cards as well as mid-range ones, which is why settings alone may not clear it. The developer has since said a performance patch is in progress, with no date — see the status at the foot of this page.

What Players Are Seeing

Players describe stutter in several different situations, and it is worth knowing which one you have before changing anything, because the workarounds are not interchangeable:

  • Traversal stutter — short hitches while moving through the world, often when new parts of the map come into view.
  • Shader compilation stutter — hitches the first time an effect, material or area is rendered, easing on a later pass through the same place.
  • Scene transition stutter — a drop as the game moves between areas or loads a new one.

These are player descriptions, not terms the developer has published for this game. People also report the frame drops happening on high-end GPUs, which is the part that makes "lower your settings" an unsatisfying answer.

Quick Fixes to Try

Try these one at a time and test the same section after each, so you know which one — if any — changed anything.

  1. Let the shader compilation finish. If the hitching is heaviest the first time an area or effect appears and better on a second pass, it is likely compilation rather than your settings. Play through the area once, then restart the game and go back through it.
  2. Turn off NVIDIA Reflex. If your graphics settings expose this option, switch it off and retest. Some players report an improvement; others report none.
  3. Turn off Ray Tracing. If Ray Tracing is enabled, disabling it is the single most commonly suggested change for frame-time problems on PC games. It is a heavy feature, and it is also the change that costs the most visually.
  4. Update your GPU driver. Install the current driver for your card and retest. This is ordinary troubleshooting rather than a reported cure for this specific game.
  5. Restart the game and retest. Several of the reports are about a fix taking effect only after the game is restarted, not when the setting is changed.
  6. Cap the frame rate, or turn on V-Sync. One of the few settings-level changes players specifically credit with reducing the stutter in this game. It will not remove the hitching, but it is cheap to test.

Change one thing at a time

If you turn off Reflex and Ray Tracing in the same launch, you will not know which one mattered — and you may have given up image quality you did not need to. One change, one retest.

Confirmed, Reported, or Just Possible

This is the distinction that matters most on a page like this one. Nothing in the list above sits in the first column.

What to try What kind of claim it is
Let shader compilation finish, then restart Community-reported. Matches how shader compilation stutter normally behaves, but the developer has not confirmed it for this game.
Turn off NVIDIA Reflex Community-reported. Some players say it helped; no official statement supports it.
Turn off Ray Tracing Community-reported. A frequent PC-gaming suggestion, not a published fix for this game.
Update the GPU driver Ordinary troubleshooting. It is reasonable to do and it is not claimed to fix this specific problem.
Restart the game to apply a change Community-reported. Several reports say the setting only takes effect after a restart.
Cap the frame rate, or enable V-Sync Community-reported. Credited by players in the same threads where others say settings changes did nothing.
Reduce graphics settings to remove the stutter Possible cause only. Players report the stutter on high-end cards too, so settings may not be the limiting factor.

Does This Always Work?

No. Stutter can come from more than one source at once, and the reports describe different situations — traversal, shader compilation and transitions — being helped by different changes, or not helped at all.

We have not tested any of these. GameHelpBase writes from published information and player reports rather than from hands-on testing, and no one has published a benchmark showing which of these changes the frame times in this game.

Official Status

Official patch announced, not yet released

There is one official statement, and it is recent. On September 24, 2026 the developer published a notice headed “Upcoming Update Plans” saying: “We are currently working on an update patch to address performance-related issues affecting the Steam version.” No release date for that patch has been announced.

So the situation is: the stutter is acknowledged, a fix is in progress, and everything in the list above is still only community-reported. If the patch lands, this page gets rewritten around it rather than having a line added to the bottom.

Written from player reports. GameHelpBase has not benchmarked this game and has not tested any of the workarounds listed here.
