What the game actually supports
Upscaling renders at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs the output. Frame generation inserts additional displayed frames. Seeing FSR or DLSS in the upscaler list does not establish that interpolation is active.
| Option | Where it comes from | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | Game menu on a compatible GeForce GPU | A reconstruction choice, with quality presets. |
| DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution | NVIDIA app override | NVIDIA names this upgrade for Townfall; it is still Super Resolution. |
| FSR / TSR | Game menu | Alternative reconstruction methods. |
| Native frame generation toggle | Absent in documented launch menus | An FSR label alone is not a frame-generation switch. |
| FSR FG Enabler / OptiScaler | Community configuration or wrapper | Results depend on release, GPU and game build. |
Claims about “DLSS 5” should identify the exact feature, override or mod involved. The NVIDIA Townfall announcement supports DLSS Super Resolution and the 4.5 app override; it does not establish a built-in DLSS 5 or Multi Frame Generation switch.
Make a clean comparison first
- Update the game, then record its menu build, GPU, driver, resolution, upscaler and quality preset. Patch 1.4.0 displays menu build v1.5.154194.
- Use one save and a short repeatable outdoor route. Let the initial shader preparation finish.
- Test the ordinary game before installing anything. Compare image clarity, input response, frame pacing and stability, not just an FPS counter.
- Change one method at a time. Turn off other interpolation layers during that comparison.
Extra displayed frames cannot replace responsive underlying rendering. A high overlay number with delayed input, unstable pacing or UI artifacts is not a successful result. No FPS multiplier is guaranteed here.
FSR FG Enabler: configuration route
Framecore publishes a preconfigured Engine.ini, with Default and alternative stability/backend files. Its file history identifies different variants; the headline version is not the game build. The author’s claims are not a benchmark on your machine.
- Close Townfall. Open
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Townfall\Saved\Config\Windowsand preserve any existing Engine.ini outside that folder. Record its original Read-only state. - Read the selected file’s current instructions. Apply one variant rather than stacking several Engine.ini replacements. Keep a record of which lines came from this mod.
- Test the same save and route. Check for artifacts, crashes and actual interpolation behavior. A successful launch or larger counter alone does not confirm the effect.
- To undo it, close the game, clear Read-only if necessary and restore the original INI. If no file existed, remove only the INI you added. Recheck the clean baseline.
Wccftech’s firsthand test reported OptiScaler stability problems and inconsistent configuration-mod reports. Treat this route as experimental rather than an official fix.
OptiScaler: wrapper route
The maintainers’ community list includes Townfall with DLSS / FSR inputs and recommends disabling Letterboxing and Mouse Smoothing. A working-list entry is not proof that every frame-generation output, mod combination or current patch works.
- Use the maintainers’ release and its matching instructions. Locate the actual shipping EXE in Townfall’s Binaries folder, rather than assuming the top-level launcher is the injection target.
- Back up files that the selected package would overwrite. Follow the documented DLL naming and installation procedure; leave OptiScaler.ini under that name.
- Open the overlay with Insert and confirm a recognized input. Upscaling replacement and frame generation are separate choices; use the Frame Generation Options documentation for the selected output.
- If crashes or artifacts start, use the package removal procedure and restore replaced files. Retest without wrappers before reporting a base-game bug.
The general manual names several supported wrapper filenames. Do not rename and scatter multiple copies just because one attempt failed. The mod guide explains file destinations and rollback.
Driver interpolation and remaining stutter
Driver features such as NVIDIA Smooth Motion or AMD Fluid Motion Frames are another route, subject to the vendor’s GPU and driver support. They are not the missing native menu option, and they should be evaluated separately from game modifications.
If the underlying problem is traversal hitching, use the stuttering checks. The October 8 patch reports frame-pacing improvements, but it does not announce a frame-generation menu.
