CONTROL Resonant: Do You Need to Play Control First?
Choose a starting point without turning the series into homework. Premise-level context only.
Quick Answer
No — you do not need to play Control first. Remedy calls CONTROL Resonant both a full sequel and a fresh entry point. Start with Resonant if it is the game you want to play; choose Control first if you want Jesse’s story and the siblings’ background. Resonant has a recap in its main menu.

Choose your starting point
| Your priority | Suggested route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Start Dylan’s adventure now | Begin CONTROL Resonant | Remedy says the games stand on their own. Use the main-menu recap for context. |
| Experience the family story in order | Control → CONTROL Resonant | Meet the world through Jesse, then follow Dylan in the sequel. |
| You started Control but did not finish | Finish Control, or use the recap | Finish first for its surprises. The faster recap reveals earlier events. |
| Learn Resonant’s combat | Start Resonant | The new protagonist uses the Aberrant and melee-focused combat. The original is not required training. |
The developer FAQ explicitly says both games stand on their own. Mikael Kasurinen’s PlayStation Blog reveal presents Resonant as a new story and entry point. Playing the original is a preference, not a prerequisite for understanding this game.
Is CONTROL Resonant a sequel?
Yes, a full sequel. Remedy’s FAQ distinguishes it from a spin-off. Control follows Jesse Faden; Resonant follows her brother Dylan into a warped Manhattan, with his search for Jesse part of the setup. It is the same fictional world through a different character and a new crisis.
The Service Weapon and supernatural gunplay of the original are different from Dylan’s shapeshifting melee weapon, the Aberrant. Familiarity with the world can enrich the story, but do not expect identical weapon progression or combat pacing.
Where to find the Control recap
Look for the Control recap at the top of Resonant’s main menu. Lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov identifies that location in his TechRadar interview. Remedy also published Previously on CONTROL on its official YouTube channel.
The recap reveals events from the original Control. Play the original first if you want its surprises unspoiled. If you want context quickly, use the recap and then begin Dylan’s story. This guide keeps to the sequel’s premise and does not recap either ending.
Do you need DLC or Alan Wake first?
There is no required multi-game checklist for starting Resonant. Kasurinen’s explanation in Tom’s Guide says the games should stand on their own and newcomers can jump in without Control or Alan Wake 2.
If you choose to play the original, Control Ultimate Edition includes its base game and two expansions, The Foundation and AWE. This is an optional route for more context, not a requirement to buy or finish the expansions before Resonant. This page does not make claims about every later DLC reference or cross-series reveal.
