CONTROL Resonant How Long to Beat: Story, Side Quests and Completion
A useful time budget, with launch-guide estimates separate from the designer’s earlier expectations.
Quick Answer
Budget 20–30 hours for a story-focused clear or 30–40 hours for full completion, using PowerPyx’s launch walkthrough estimates. These are guide estimates, not a measured player average. The designer’s earlier expectation was about 30 hours for the core experience and about 50 for completionists.

Story, side quests and completion
| Play style | Time budget | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Story-focused | 20–30 hours | PowerPyx’s September 22 walkthrough estimate for the story ending. |
| Story + selected side content | No separately verified figure | Depends on which optional quests and exploration you choose. No fixed extra-hours package is established. |
| Full completion | 30–40 hours | PowerPyx’s 100% estimate. No separate all-collectibles timing sample is given in its overview. |
| Developer’s earlier expectation | ~30 hours core / ~50 completionist | Sergey Mohov’s July 29 TechRadar interview, before release. |
The launch walkthrough supplies the first and third rows. A story-focused route still follows linked questlines needed for progression. The two ranges are total-run estimates; do not read them as “story time plus exactly ten hours.”
What these estimates are based on
| Source | Evidence type | Sample boundary |
|---|---|---|
| PowerPyx | Published walkthrough estimate | No statistical sample count, difficulty or platform timing breakdown supplied in the overview. |
| Sergey Mohov / TechRadar | Developer interview before launch | A design expectation; not a post-release player survey. |
| HowLongToBeat | Player-submission aggregate | Current category times and sample counts could not be verified here on October 7. No HLTB average is quoted. |
Some guides still present 30 / 50 hours as measured final length. Keep each number’s origin attached: the interview and launch guide offer different kinds of evidence. This page does not average them together or relabel “core experience” as a strictly main-quest-only run.
What can change your time
Optional quests, collectible searches, route-finding, combat retries and build experimentation all affect a run. Decide whether your target is the credits, selected side stories, every collectible or all achievements before comparing clocks.
Settings and version matter. Remedy changed combat balance in launch hotfix 1.3.3, and update 1.4.0 reduced combat intensity in the Unknown Zone. An earlier review build is useful context, not a precise prediction of a later run. No difficulty-specific hours are established here.
At two hours per evening, 20–30 hours means 10–15 sessions; 30–40 hours means 15–20 sessions. That is planning arithmetic, not another playtime study.
Do you have to finish everything before the credits?
No. Remedy’s September 25 post-launch article confirms that you can continue after the main story to finish side quests and discover World Feats. It also describes New Game+ as another run. Count replays separately from first-run completion.
For a manageable first playthrough, focus on the story and side content that interests you, then use post-story cleanup for remaining goals. A published “100%” estimate is not a guaranteed schedule for every collectible or achievement.
