Primary and secondary forms

The Aberrant is Dylan’s transforming melee weapon. Your primary determines the regular attack string; the secondary gives you a different attack pattern. These are loadout choices within one weapon.

SlotFormAttack role
PrimaryStrikePaired blades; quick attacks and critical-hit potential.
PrimaryGlaiveScythe; sweeping coverage that pushes enemies away.
PrimaryCleaveAxe; extra damage when attacking from behind.
SecondaryCrushHammer; a heavy impact you can charge.
SecondaryExtendExtended flail / segmented weapon; broader melee reach.
SecondaryDrillA piercing attack focused along a line.

Choose the attack pattern for the opening you can create: quick hits, enemies surrounding you, or a target you can flank. Read the upgrade nodes too; later moves can change how the form fits your style.

Unlock and equip a form

  1. Enter The Gap using its travel action. The controller guides show holding D-pad Down.
  2. Approach the tall Aberrant upgrade structure and use its interaction prompt.
  3. Select Primary Forms or Secondary Forms, choose the starting node, and spend the displayed Living Shards.
  4. Open Loadout and assign your purchased form to its matching slot.

Your first primary is chosen near the beginning of the campaign, with the secondary choice following later. Additional primaries cost three Living Shards each and secondaries cost two in the launch guides.

A loadout uses one primary, one secondary and one Combo Finisher. Buying a form expands the available choices; you still need to equip it. Change the selection between fights. IGN · loadout and secondary forms · 2:18 ▶

Read the upgrade requirement

Select an available node below a form’s starting node to inspect its effect and material cost. The resources depend on that upgrade: Source and Corrupted Elements are different from the Living Shards used for forms.

A node upgrades a move. This Dodge Strike panel shows one Corrupted Element, 300 Source and +3 Aberrant Strength. These are this node’s costs, not a price for every upgrade. Image: Beebom / Remedy Entertainment.

If a resource is missing, compare the owned and required amounts on the right. Check the preceding node in the branch as well. Returning with materials and selecting a purchased form in Loadout solve different problems.

A reset uses a Reset Item. Simply switching to another form you already purchased is a loadout change; do not spend a reset just to change equipment.

Where Combo Finishers fit

The third slot adds an attack after your primary string. The six options are Concussive Beatdown, Uppercut Surge, Wide Edge, Spin Edge, Split Pivot and Split Orbit. Purchase one under Combo Finishers, then assign it in Loadout → Combo.

Use the Combo Finishers guide for the threshold and input sequence. Reach is a grapple obtained from a Fault; improving a weapon’s reach does not unlock it.
