CONTROL Resonant Abilities Not Working: Power, Loadout and Patch Checks
Diagnose CONTROL Resonant abilities that will not activate: Power drain, equipped branches, NG+ traversal and the specific released patch fixes.
Quick answer
Check Loadout, Power and your current bindings first. Ignite can keep draining Power, and NG+ resets story traversal unlocks. For the specific post-Artist Gap blocker, Remedy released a fix in 1.4.2. Match the failed move to its condition before resetting your build.

Identify what stopped working
| Symptom | First useful check |
|---|---|
| Ability icon cannot be used | Confirm it is unlocked and equipped; check the required Power and your current Controls bindings. |
| Ignite is active but Power stays empty | Turn Ignite off when disengaging. Its continuous cost and the demonstrated recovery restriction can leave a melee build starved. |
| Reach or Shift disappeared in New Game Plus | Traversal unlocks reset with story progress; the combat carryover does not unlock every movement power immediately. |
| Stuck in The Gap after The Artist | Hotfix 1.4.2 addresses quitting to Main Menu before using the ability-selection prompt. Update and check the saved objective. |
| Ground Slam fails under a low ceiling | Update 1.4.0 lists a fix for the head-hit case; it is not a promise that every location permits the move. |
Test one ability with a usable Power reserve
- Open Loadout and verify the intended combat ability, rather than assuming the most recently unlocked branch was equipped.
- Inspect the Controls action you actually use. PC and controller actions can be remapped; a guide’s default button may not match yours.
- In a safe opening, switch off a continuously draining toggle such as Ignite. Recover Power through your normal combat loop, then test the ability once against a reachable target.
- If the cast works, review the original resource or input condition. If it fails in the same way with sufficient Power, note the ability, objective, platform and version.
A missing alternative ability is a different issue
Shield and Volatile Anomaly are alternative first-run choices; Ignite and Inferno also come from one choice. Buying upgrades for an owned ability does not unlock its alternative automatically. Use the respec guide when your goal is to change the branch, and the NG+ carryover guide when your question concerns a new cycle.
Patch limits and reporting
Remedy’s 1.4.0 notes also address Push reactions in Gravity Anomalies and a Shield/Wallet interaction. Match the actual move and condition before diagnosing your problem as one of those fixes. There is no verified universal button reset or reinstall that repairs every ability state. Capture the repeatable failed action and submit it through Remedy Support if the updated game remains blocked.
