Choose by how you spend an opening
| Compare | Ignite | Inferno |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Adds Fire damage and Burn to melee, Barrage, Shield and Volatile Anomaly. | Creates increasingly intense forward Fire waves that build Burn. |
| Combat rhythm | Toggle on, continue the attacks already in your build, then toggle off. | Cast a fire attack during an opening; repeated casts accelerate the sequence. |
| Power pattern | An activation cost plus continuous drain while active. | A cost each time you cast a wave. |
| Best reason to pick it | You like your melee setup or want to add Burn to a supported ability. | You want a dedicated fire attack instead of a buff to your normal attacks. |
We recommend Ignite for a melee-focused first run. It preserves your preferred form pair and adds fire pressure to attacks you already know. Choose Inferno if you want to spend a clear opening on direct fire waves and can maintain the Power needed to repeat them.
Inferno is a short-range fire option; it does not replace a long-range projectile tool such as Barrage. Neither choice provides free damage: Ignite pays over time, while repeated Inferno waves repeatedly spend Power.
Ignite: manage the toggle
- Activate Ignite when you are ready to attack or use a supported ability.
- Build Burn with the hits you can safely land. Drill is a useful repeated-hit option, but a different upgraded form may fit your encounter better.
- Turn it off when you lose contact, reposition for a long time or enter a long execution.
- Use the next safe unbuffed melee opening to recover Power, then reactivate when the cost buys useful pressure.
The elemental build demonstration reports that Power recovery is blocked while Ignite is active. Leaving it on while trying to refill is therefore the first thing to check when this setup feels starved.
Inferno: use a deliberate fire window
Face a reachable target, cast the wave, and repeat while the opening lasts. Subsequent uses can follow faster, but the next cast still needs Power. Stop when the enemy is about to interrupt you; return to safe melee rather than spending the full bar into an unsafe sequence.
If you prefer Inferno, choose a primary you can use reliably during recovery. An Uppercut Surge setup can help create eligible lifted targets for Power recovery; it is a separate purchase and some enemies cannot be lifted.
The two frames show the same Ability Strength 2 save. In that recording Ignite costs 200 to activate plus 45 per second, while Inferno shows 150 per cast. Damage and Falter depend on progression, and older guide tables give different costs. Check your current menu instead of assuming Inferno always costs more.
Unlock and revisit the choice
- Defeat The Deserter in Central’s Patterned Factory.
- In the resulting Combat Ability selection, inspect both panels and choose one. Use the tutorial targets to try the behavior before leaving.
- Equip the chosen ability in Loadout and give it a convenient active-set position.
Your initial reward is one choice from the pair. Returning to The Gap does not automatically grant the other choice. To revisit an excluded combat ability, use the relevant Reset Item flow and check the displayed confirmation; do not confuse that with equipping a form you already own.
A later Resonant Token from Pope’s Research can buy an additional combat ability from earlier choices. It can be spent on another reward pair too, so taking both fire abilities is an option rather than a required build step.
The Park and Burn/Infected combinations
Both options give you Fire for Mold encounters. Ignite is convenient when you want to keep your normal weapon rhythm; Inferno gives a separate fire attack. Do not wait for Infected to apply to Mold enemies before using your Fire option.
Against an eligible enemy, combining Burn and Infected can trigger an explosion. Growth or Spore Burst supplies Infected; either fire ability supplies the Burn side. The Build guide gives an Ignite/Growth/Drill rotation and a Spore Burst alternative.
If nothing happens, check whether both statuses reached the same target and whether protection is preventing their application. An ability’s name or fire animation alone does not prove the full status combination has occurred.
