Start with a build you can obtain
Our first-run recommendation is a Falter and Power build that can grow into Ignite + Growth + Drill. Start with the attacks you can land, earn an execution opening, then use Power to support the next fight. The elemental version requires two later Resonant rewards, so it is not a prologue loadout.
| Stage | Core setup | Available after |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Strike + Crush; Concussive Beatdown when unlocked. Shield for safer approaches, or Volatile Anomaly if you prefer a summon. | The Artist opens the first combat-ability choice. Combo Finishers require Aberrant Strength 15 and purchase/equipment. |
| Fire unlocked | Keep the dependable form pair and add Ignite. Try Drill when you can maintain contact. | Defeat The Deserter in Central’s Patterned Factory. |
| Burn + Infected | Strike + Drill, Ignite + Growth. Keep a finisher for groups; Spin Edge is a later option. | Defeat The Collective beneath The Park and choose Growth. |
Shield and Volatile Anomaly are alternatives from the same first choice. Growth and Spore Burst are alternatives from the Park reward. Do not plan a first-run build around owning both sides immediately.
Early setup: create an execution opening
Strike gives short attack commitments; Crush adds impact when an enemy leaves an opening. Concussive Beatdown reinforces Falter if its full sequence can land. Uppercut Surge is an alternative for Lift and Power recovery from eligible targets.
- Approach while keeping room to dodge. Use Shield briefly if you picked it; a summon is an alternative distraction, not a permanent guarantee of safety.
- Land a short primary string. Use charged Crush after a missed enemy attack instead of charging while surrounded.
- Execute an eligible Faltered enemy when the prompt appears.
- With Dominance purchased, use the following melee-damage window on the next threat. Keep access to Health Elements rather than chasing a distant target.
Buy Dominance first if this execution loop is your plan, then work toward Perfect Dodge and the linked Retaliation improvements. Talents use Talent Points and connected prerequisites; weapon moves use the Aberrant tree. Spending on one does not automatically unlock the other.
Mid-game setup: Ignite, Growth and Drill
Take Ignite from The Deserter and Growth from The Park Resonant. Unlock Drill in The Gap; its Drill Down upgrade increases its repeated-hit speed. That makes it useful for applying Burn during a clear opening.
- Place a Growth ally where it can reach a useful target, away from the place you intend to trigger the explosion.
- Look for Infected on the enemy the ally actually hit. If it attacks a different target, change your target or reposition.
- Toggle Ignite on and hold Drill against that target while it is safe. Building Burn on an Infected enemy triggers the combined explosion.
- Turn Ignite off when contact ends, before a long execution, or when Power is low. Restore Power with unbuffed melee, then repeat.
The statuses can be applied in either order. Starting Growth first helps you see which enemy it selected before paying Ignite’s continuing cost. The creator’s damage numbers belong to that build; they are not a guaranteed one-hit kill.

Against Mold: use Fire pressure rather than waiting for an Infected combination. Against protected Hiss, deal with the protection first; an enemy that is resisting status application will not start the planned loop just because the attack looks fiery.
If you chose Spore Burst: apply Infected directly, then add Burn with Ignite. This gives more deliberate target selection, but it loses Growth’s summon-based passives. If you chose Inferno, use its waves for the fire part and preserve a safe melee recovery window.
Talents that reinforce the loop
| Priority | Talent | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Dominance; Perfect Dodge | An execution-based melee window, then a dodge-triggered Retaliation response. |
| With Growth | Guarded Formation; Enduring Ally | Less incoming damage near summons and a longer summon lifetime. |
| With Ignite | Reactive Detonation | A Perfect Dodge during Ignite applies Burn to nearby enemies. It needs Ignite to be active. |
| Later additions | Mold Colony; Summon Synergy | An extra Mold ally and melee bonuses tied to the summons you actually have on the field. |
Follow the connected nodes and their displayed requirements. Do not buy a summon-only talent for a build using only Spore Burst, or rush late nodes before your basic attacks and Power recovery work. Watch the Ignite talent explanation · 8:30 ▶
Artifacts: support, penalties and substitutes
Artifacts are optional reinforcements to the core combo. Find the Untapped item, craft it at Artifact Formation in The Gap, then equip the finished Artifact in Loadout. A first-run loadout has three Artifact slots.
| Artifact | Get it from | Use or replace it |
|---|---|---|
| Bar Blade | The Party Won’t Stop rewards its Untapped recipe. | Slow health regeneration while a summon is nearby. Useful with Growth; less useful when you fight far from your ally. |
| Bout Guard | The Complete Set rewards its Untapped recipe. | The recorded menu shows +50% Power recovery and +20% incoming damage. Use it only if the extra risk is manageable. |
| Flexible survival slot | Use an Artifact whose condition you can trigger. Lost Prescription is a Downtown vendor option for Perfect Dodge recovery. | If deaths are the problem, replace the incoming-damage penalty before adding more offense. The core Burn/Infected interaction still works without Bout Guard. |
No preorder or Deluxe Artifact is required. Keep a third slot flexible for the encounter instead of buying an entire recipe list before testing the core attacks.
When the build stalls
| Problem | Check | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Power never recovers | Is Ignite still on while you travel, execute or try to refill? | Toggle it off and create a short unbuffed melee window. Avoid spending every ability at once. |
| No elemental explosion | Did both statuses build on the same enemy? Is it protected or Mold? | Follow Growth’s actual target; remove protection; use Fire alone against Mold. |
| Drill is interrupted | Are you trying to hold contact in a crowded or unsafe opening? | Use brief Strike hits, create space, or return to Crush for a safer punish. |
| Summons die quickly | Are they standing beside the explosion target? | Place them farther away while keeping the target in range. |
| Frequent deaths | Does an Artifact increase incoming damage? | Remove that penalty, use a defensive alternative, and reconsider positioning before changing all your skills. |
Switch purchased weapon forms in Loadout outside combat. Changing a mutually exclusive combat-ability choice uses the relevant reset flow in The Gap and a Reset Item; inspect the confirmation screen. A later Resonant Token can add an extra ability, but the core build above does not require it.
