Which character should you choose for a first clear?
Quick answer
For learning, start with a survivor whose damage pattern you understand. Choose a different character when you can support its signature mechanic; a letter tier without that context does not predict your next run.

Choose by the job you want to practise
| Goal | Characters to consider | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Learn the basic grid | Survivor, Sheriff | Conventional weapon support and reload planning. |
| Practise triggers | Carver, Penny | Turrets or balloons benefit from compatible activations. |
| Control enemy movement | Bushy | Roots and bonuses against rooted targets. |
| Use movement as the mechanic | Surfer | Surf movement replaces ordinary dash behavior. |
| Develop a level-driven swarm | Vampire | More bats arrive with levels and use melee effects. |
| Use periodic area attacks | Santa | Airstrikes can leave gifts that strengthen the ability. |
Separate unlock difficulty from combat strength
Death is a long-survival unlock goal; that does not automatically make it the easiest next character for a new player. Chicken’s legendary-crafting task and Astronaut’s shuttle event ask for different preparation. Pick the goal you can reliably complete, then learn the resulting character before judging it.
Compare your actual runs
Use character-item modifiers and Run History to compare attempts. Keep the route and build intention similar when possible. This is a selection guide, not a claim of measured current-version win rates for the whole roster.
