Stagger, Resonance and Battle Preparation
Understand damage, elemental pressure and the action order before changing your build.
Quick answer
Use the enemy’s weakness to work toward Stagger, then spend the opening on damage. Inspect the timeline before committing your healer to an attack.

Act earlier or transfer an available turn
Tidus teaches First Strike at Mastery Rank 3; equip the learned passive on the character who needs the opening action. Compare Speed gains from gear with any armor penalties, and train the relevant Vision’s permanent mastery bonuses. Haste and Slow change relative action order during battle.
Leah’s Pass the Torch is a different tool: its recorded mastery gate is MR 5, with 25 MP and 30 AP when separately equipped. It hands the acting turn to an ally, useful when that ally can hit the required weakness. A random preemptive encounter cannot be manually guaranteed, and a passive that improves damage against an enemy that has not acted is a separate effect.

Target a group without confusing damage and Stagger
For a spell that supports group targeting, switch the target selection to All before confirming. The command reaches every eligible enemy or ally, while its effect on each individual target is weaker. Single-target and group use of the same spell therefore serve different purposes.
- Select the command and inspect the target-selection display.
- Choose one target when a specific enemy needs focused gauge pressure, or All when several targets need the effect.
- Review the reduced per-target effect and MP commitment before confirming. A wide attack can accidentally remove a dangerous boss’s last escort.
Earn the appropriate battle bonus
| Goal | Battle condition |
|---|---|
| EXP bonus | Win without taking damage |
| Gil bonus | Make an Overkill follow-up in the bonus phase after all enemies are defeated |
| MRP bonus | Defeat the last enemy while it is staggered |
The victory conditions are separate. A fast victory does not automatically earn every bonus. Choose a farming route.

Three things to separate
| System | Purpose |
|---|---|
| HP damage | Defeats the enemy when its HP is depleted. |
| Stagger | Creates a battle opening; a high-damage neutral attack need not be the best gauge-building action. |
| Resonance | The equipped Vision’s special action; plan it around the available opening. |
A repeatable decision loop
- Inspect the enemy and the next dangerous action.
- Check the available weakness commands and their resource cost.
- Reserve recovery if the next incoming action could defeat a party member.
- Build the gauge with the appropriate attacks.
- Use the opening to convert prepared resources into damage, then rebuild your recovery position.
Why a strong party can still fail
| Observed failure | Adjustment to try |
|---|---|
| Gauge barely moves | Check weakness, immunity and current stance before adding more neutral attacks. |
| Healer loses every action | Equip ailment prevention or give another character recovery. |
| Damage falls after an enemy action | Read the new status: physical protection, magic protection and elemental effects are different. |
| Good opening, no MP left | Spend fewer expensive commands on earlier routine enemies. |
Visions and Espers are different
Visions lend characters commands and bonuses. Espers are temporary summons; they do not replace the Vision system. When changing one part of a build, review what commands remain available across the whole active party.
